Why does concrete crack and heave in Cornwall?
Concrete cracks and heaves in Cornwall mainly because water gets under it and freezes. Much of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry sits on fine marine clay left by the ancient Champlain Sea, and that clay holds water instead of draining it. When the ground freezes, the wet clay expands and lifts whatever sits on it, then drops again in spring.
A thin gravel layer over that clay is not enough. We excavate to firm ground, replace soft material with compacted granular base, and slope the finished surface so meltwater runs away from the slab and the house. Outdoor concrete is air-entrained, which gives the water inside the hardened concrete room to expand without breaking the surface. Those steps cost more on day one and far less over the life of the slab.
How does road salt affect new concrete?
Road salt affects new concrete by drawing more water into the surface and adding freeze–thaw cycles, which can flake off the top layer in thin chips called scaling. Cornwall streets are salted heavily all winter, and cars carry that brine straight onto driveways, garage aprons and walks.
We protect against it with a properly air-entrained mix, careful finishing that keeps the surface paste intact, and a full curing period before the first winter. A penetrating sealer applied at the right time adds another layer of protection.
Should cracked concrete be repaired or replaced?

A single hairline crack in a sound driveway is cosmetic; a panel that has dropped below the garage floor or tips water toward the foundation is a support problem that sealing will not fix.
