Choose poured steps when you need a wide landing, curved or flared sides, a custom number of risers or steps that match an existing walkway, and choose precast concrete steps for a standard door where a quick installation matters more than shape. Both are only as good as the base they sit on.
Poured steps are formed on site, so every riser can be set to the same height for the exact rise between the walk and the door. Precast units come in fixed sizes and may need a landing or a step adjustment to fit. We explain both options at the site visit.
Can old concrete steps be repaired?
Old steps can be repaired when the body of the steps is solid and only the edges or treads are chipped, spalled or worn. Rebuilding broken nosings, patching shallow damage and resurfacing the treads can make them safe again at a lower cost than replacement.
Repair is not worth it when the steps have tilted, separated from the house or crumble deep into the core, because a patch will not hold on moving or weak concrete. In those cases, demolishing the old steps and pouring new ones on a proper base is the lasting fix.

Sidewalks that sit on city property or connect to a municipal walk may need approval, so check with the City of Cornwall before work starts. Porch slabs under a roof should still be sloped slightly so blown-in rain and snowmelt run away from the door.
